The Glasgow School of Art

Talk by Peter Trowles

Peter Trowles MLitt., FRSA is the Mackintosh curator at the Glasgow School of Art, which celebrated its centenary last year in 2009. The Mackintosh Building has recently undergone a £8.6 million conservation and access project, making the building and its collections accessible to the public, while still being a working art school.

Peter will talk about the conservation of the building and show a short film of the project. He will include an update on the proposals for the new campus, and make a tour of the other historical collections and archives. More information can be found on the website www.gsa.ac.uk

All talks will take place at the Elm Bank Hotel, York.

Talks are usually illustrated with slides and last for 1 to 1.5 hours. Speakers who have published books often bring a small supply for sale at the talk. There is a charge of £5 per talk for members, £6 non-members to help cover the expenses of the visting speaker.

We are affiliated to the main CRM Society in Glasgow and hold regular meetings in York as well as arranging visits to Glasgow to view Mackintosh's buildings. We have also extended the scope of our activities to include visits to buildings designed by prominent contemporaries e.g. CFA Voysey, MA Baillie Scott, G. Walton.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) architect, designer and artist is celebrated around the world today as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the period which spans from the mid 1890s to the late 1920s. Most of his surviving work can be found in or around Glasgow.
